A mural does not need wallpaper, paint or a projector stencil to go up on a Dubai office wall. Sun Studio, a direct UV printing studio in Al Quoz, Dubai, prints murals directly onto a finished wall on site with a machine it calls the wallPen E2. According to Sun Studio's wall printing page, the wallPen "stands on the floor on a wheeled platform and travels along a floor rail, without touching the wall" while it prints and cures the image in place.
There is no wallpaper, vinyl, adhesive or seam in the finished result, the company says. The wallPen prints and cures the ink as it moves, so the mural goes up in one on-site pass rather than being pasted up panel by panel.
What walls it can print on
Sun Studio's wall printing page lists the surfaces the wallPen works on: painted plaster and skim, smooth concrete and render, gypsum board and partition walls, and textured walls, where the texture shows through the printed image. The surface has to be "sound, dry, clean" and properly finished before the machine arrives, the company says.
Size limits, price and no minimum order
Height is the limiting dimension: Sun Studio's own figures put the maximum at 4 metres, while width has no stated limit because the printer moves continuously along its floor rail. The page also lists unprintable margins of about 25cm at the top and bottom of the image and 6cm on the left and 10cm on the right. Pricing is a flat AED 950 per square metre, excluding VAT, with no minimum order, Sun Studio says, and travel outside Dubai is included in the quote. Ceilings are not printed in place — the company prints those as panels in the studio instead.
Office corners, gym walls and a showroom's trucks
At the Business Bay office of PRO TECHnology — the Dubai group Sun Studio belongs to — the wallPen printed one continuous image across both walls of a corner office in about two hours, according to Sun Studio's wall printing page.
In Abu Dhabi, the company says it printed all seven walls of Body Abs Gym with the same machine.
The wallPen's work is not limited to flat building walls. Sun Studio's page describes printing the grey tarpaulin sides of two trucks at JETOUR's showroom in Al Ain — four sides in six hours — using the same printer.
At Emirates NBD's head office in Dubai, Sun Studio printed country and city names directly onto a layered map panel already fixed to the wall, the company says.
Why UV light, not paint or paste
The wallPen belongs to the UV-cured inkjet printing family, in which ultraviolet light sets the ink almost as soon as it lands rather than letting it air-dry. TROY Group explains the underlying process: "Instead of waiting for the ink to dry naturally or using heat, UV light instantly dries the ink upon contact." That is what lets a printed mural go straight from the machine to a finished wall without a drying period or a pasting step.
A branding surface, not just decoration
Gulf office design is leaning the same direction. Trowbridge Gallery, a commercial wall-art supplier, wrote in August 2026 that "wall art is shifting from decorative finishing to functional, experiential, and brand-driven elements that affect wellbeing, wayfinding, and identity." The UAE's wider interior design market is "estimated to grow from USD 1.94 billion in 2026 to reach USD 3.11 billion by 2031, at a CAGR of 9.83% during the forecast period (2026-2031)", according to market research firm Mordor Intelligence — a trajectory that includes the kind of branded offices, gyms and showrooms Sun Studio has already printed for.
Sun Studio is specific about what the wallPen cannot fix. Damp patches, flaking paint or a loose finish have to be resolved before the machine arrives, dusty work nearby needs to be finished first, and once a wall is printed it cannot be changed again without redecorating over it, the company says. The published process runs in four steps: send wall photos, dimensions and artwork; a surface assessment to confirm what preparation is needed; wall preparation and laying out the artwork to the exact dimensions; then on-site printing and curing.
Equipment, project and service details in this article are as published by Sun Studio at the time of writing.
