The Egyptian Football Association has extended the contract of national team coach Hossam Hassan until 2030, the federation said on Tuesday 1 September 2026, according to Ahram Online. The federation's statement, as reported, set out the end date and nothing else: no length in years, no financial terms, no performance conditions.
Hassan, 60, has been in charge of the Pharaohs since February 2024, guiding them to the 2026 World Cup and a fourth-place finish at the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations, Ahram Online reported. Egypt have played 35 matches under him, winning 20, drawing nine and losing six, according to the same report.
Tuesday's announcement completed a process the EFA board began almost two months earlier. Egypt Independent reported on 9 July 2026 that EFA president Hany Abou Rida announced the board of directors had approved a contract renewal for Hassan and for team manager Ibrahim Hassan, and that the board would finalise the official renewal procedures at its next meeting, to be held immediately upon the national team delegation's arrival home.
The EFA said the decision stemmed from the board's commitment to continuing the national team's technical project and building on Egyptian football's recent historic achievements, according to that report. Egypt Independent also noted that EFA board member Mostafa Abou Zahra had previously indicated Hassan was set to remain in charge through the 2030 World Cup. The board's July approval came shortly after Egypt's exit from the 2026 World Cup.

The record the extension rests on
Everything published about Hassan's second contract concerns its end date rather than its content. What is on the record is the run of results that preceded it, all of it reported by Ahram Online in the same piece that carried the extension.
- Thirty-five matches in charge since February 2024: 20 wins, nine draws and six losses, according to Ahram Online.
- A first appearance in the knockout stage of a World Cup in Egypt's history, in 2026, ended by a 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the last 16, according to Ahram Online.
- Fourth place at the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations, according to Ahram Online.
The round-of-16 defeat is the fixture the extension is built around in both accounts. Egypt Independent described it as a dramatic 3-2 loss to Lionel Messi's Argentina, and said the board's renewal announcement followed it within days. Ahram Online framed the same match as the end of the deepest World Cup run Egypt have made, a run that a photo caption on that report shows beginning with a round-of-32 win over Australia at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington.
The Africa Cup of Nations result is the less flattering half of the ledger. Fourth place at the 2026 tournament means Egypt reached a semi-final and did not win it, and neither report published a target — a title, a qualification, a ranking — that the new contract is meant to deliver by 2030.
How Hassan got the job
Hassan was appointed after the Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria was dismissed following Egypt's campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Pharaohs were eliminated in the round of 16 after an 8-7 defeat on penalties, Ahram Online reported.
That sequence gives the extension its shape. Hassan was hired as a corrective appointment in the middle of a cycle, in February 2024, and the EFA has now committed to him for a full one — from the aftermath of one AFCON exit through to the World Cup of 2030.
The player behind the appointment
Hassan made his Egypt debut in 1985 and helped the Pharaohs qualify for the 1990 World Cup, scoring the winner against Algeria in the playoffs, Ahram Online reported.
He is Egypt's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 176 international appearances, won three Africa Cup of Nations titles and was the tournament's top scorer in 1998, according to the same report. In 2006, aged 39, he became the oldest player to score at an Africa Cup of Nations, in a tournament Egypt won.
He retired from playing in 2008 and moved into coaching, managing several Egyptian clubs and Jordan's national team before taking charge of Egypt, Ahram Online reported. The extension runs from that February 2024 appointment to a contract that ends in 2030 — by EgyptPulse News's count, roughly six years in the post for the country's record goalscorer.
The fixtures the contract now covers
Neither the EFA statement nor either report set out a fixture list attached to the new deal. The only horizon either report names is the 2030 World Cup, and on the published terms that is the outer edge of the agreement rather than a stated objective — the qualifying campaign for it has not begun.
What has not been published
A number of things a reader might reasonably want are absent from both accounts. Neither gives a salary or any financial figure. Neither states the contract's length in years, only the year it ends. Neither mentions a break clause, a release fee, or a results trigger that would end the arrangement early.
Nor is there detail on the technical staff beyond Ibrahim Hassan, whose renewal as team manager Egypt Independent reported alongside the head coach's in July. Ahram Online's 1 September report dates the federation's confirmation to Tuesday without naming the day the paperwork was signed. Until the EFA publishes the terms, the extension is a date and a record — and the record is the part that can be checked.
